How to Choose the Perfect Photo for Your Portrait

Every portrait begins with a photograph, and I know that for many of my clients, those photos are precious memories of a beloved fur baby who’s no longer here. The tips below will help you know what to look for when choosing which photos to send.

I’ll work with what you already have and help you choose the image that best captures their unique personality and spirit. If your companion is still with you, you might like to take a few fresh photos, but only if you don’t already have clear, well-lit ones that show their features and character.

Whichever situation you’re in, this guide is here to help you feel confident in selecting the images that will translate beautifully into a soulful work of art.

Lighting is Key

Let There Be Light!

Good lighting can make all the difference. Natural light, especially during early morning or late afternoon is ideal. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can create strong shadows and highlights.

Try to take photos outdoors or near a bright window with your pet facing the light. Try and steer clear of flash photography.

Positioning of Your Pet in the Photo

Keep the Focus on Them

To get the best result, make sure your fur baby is clearly visible in the image, without toys, furniture, or other distractions blocking their face or body.

Your pet should be in the foreground, filling most of the frame so their features are easy to see. This helps me capture the fine details that make them them.

Avoid photos where they’re far off in the distance, as zooming in later can reduce image quality.

Show Their True Spirit

Photos that bring their personality to life.

The best portraits come from images that reflect your pet’s unique character, the tilt of the head, their curious gaze, or their calm, soulful look.

Take photos at eye level, with your pet’s eyes or nose in sharp focus.

One Portrait, One Soul

Why each portrait focuses on a single fur baby

Each portrait I create is designed to honour the individual soul of your fur baby. It’s far easier to capture their unique personality, expression, and energy when the focus is entirely on them.

For this reason, please choose photos that feature one pet only. This allows me to truly connect with them and ensure their character shines through in every detail of your finished artwork.

Finding the Perfect Photo, Together

Please don’t worry if you’re unsure which image to choose, we’ll decide together. Once you’ve shared your photos, I’ll carefully review them and select the one that will work best for your artwork. My goal is always the same: to create a soulful portrait that truly captures your fur baby’s spirit, so you’ll have something to treasure forever.
